A bit about me.

I’ve been on a Sabbath journey since 2006. It has transformed my life in more ways than I can imagine or articulate. It has saved my marriage. It has literally saved my life. I’m now a Sabbath evangelist. I want nothing more than for everyone to experience the life-giving, delight-drenched, joy-blooming gift of Sabbath.

Beyond being a pilgrim walking the Sabbath way, I am a husband to Mariah (since 2003), a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend, and a neighbor. I am also Professor of Hebrew and Old Testament at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, MI, and the author of four books.

My first three books are all attempts to infuse traditionally academic pursuits with a sense of play, and so to reconnect traditionally mental and intellectual pursuits with the physicality of our bodies. My most recent book, releasing June 3, 2025 from Tyndale Refresh, is The Sabbath Way: Making Room in Your Life for Rest, Connection, and Delight, which has been a passion project of mine for years. You can learn more about my books from the Books page.

I also preach regularly and speak in churches, colleges, and organizations on a variety of topics, most notably on Sabbath and how to find the rest our souls long for. I also speak at/lead retreats focused on the Sabbath, facilitate workshops on bringing Scripture to life through embodiment and discovering our own stories in the biblical story.

If you are interested in having me come speak to your church or organization, please get in touch with me through the Connect page. I’d love to hear from you and imagine together how I can help you and your people discover the Sabbath, rediscover Scripture, or begin an adventure into the wild and wooly world of the Hebrew Bible.

When I’m not in the classroom or at the writing desk I can generally be found searching for wonder while walking the fields near my house listening to a book or laughing along with the Smartless podcast, experimenting with nature/bird photography, going to a farmers market, watching a movie, or hanging out with Mariah, who is my most consistent source of delight and amazement.
